We would be glad if you could answer some questions regarding the evaluation of the LiverSurgeryTrainer. The evaluation form can be found here... |
Sub-projects
Overview
 |
The project is supported within the frame of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) project "Gentle Surgery with Minimal-Invasive Technology" in the sub-project "FUSION". |
In case-based learning systems—especially in surgery—static, interactive and dynamic visualizations of the patients data are preferable to represent the enormous anatomic diversity and the manifold abnormal changes.

The LiverSurgeryTrainer—which is developed during this project and is based on clinical data—is an adequate learning system for the treatment of liver tumors. Design and realization of the system are carried out in close cooperation with several surgical experts and their teams. These experts possess the necessary expertise for all surgical interventions to be practiced (oncologic resection, liver living donor, tumour ablation). The learning system is based on image data, image analysis results, and 3D models as well as on surgery videos and diagnosis information. The system focuses on surgical anatomy and therapy planning. Prospective (visceral) surgeons can interactively explore case descriptions and 3D models, practice therapy decisions and operation planning, and revert to guided presentations and standardized views. In this context, some methodological aspects are intensively examined. Among them are:
- the efficient extraction of appropriate surface models from segmentation results, the development of authoring techniques for the generation of animations, the choice of cases, the enhancement and testing of interaction techniques for the virtual resection, and
- the testing and evaluation of 3D interaction techniques, especially for rotation.
Due to the successful work from 2003 to 2005 it was possible to receive a BMBF grant which shall be used to extend the practical work and to obtain an application in surgical education. Thus, it shall be systematically examined if and how the computer-assisted training can be connected with other types of surgical eductaion.
