The Lab Project comprises practical technical work and software development for building a multi-touch tabletop along with several sample applications in the field.

Team 1: Building a multi-touch tabletop

We have successfully built a multitouch console using the FTIR-principle. Due to its large scale (100cm x 70cm) it is usable by multiple user at once. Using touchlib as a multitouch-framework, we are able to track multiple inputs, either from touch or active IR-sources. The console is being used as a source of research within the CVSE group. Further information can be found at http://handzeichen.cvler.de.

Team 2: Developing a tabletop pong game

MCN Pong is a marker based Pong clone. The complete game can be controlled by specially constructed tangible widgets being tracked by an infrared camera. In addition to the two bat controlling widgets there are two widgets for controlling the in-game menu, which can be used to change the number of rounds and levels. MCN Pong features levels of various difficulties. In the case that no camera is available, keyboard input can be used instead of marker tracking.

Team 3: Development of a pen-based multi-user application for media management

The Pic-Table is a Pen-touched table-top application based on Anoto-Pattern technique that enables multi-users to interact with interface only by pen touching. The application is designed for reviewing the photos or sharing the photos with people and friends and it supports up to eight persons simultaneously working on it. It also provides different means such as Widgets, Gestures, Wormholes and Paths system… and several modes such as Picture handing mode, Path mode, Picture drawing and editing mode… for users to directly interact with photos to do the following operations: Moving, Rotating, Scaling, Creating, Deleting, Transferring, Drawing and Editing… For the Gestures, there are four pen-gestures enabled: Square, Crossing, Circle and Spiral as alternatives for achieving some of actions mentioned above.

Team 4: Pen-based multiuser tabletop game

In the arcadelike game "Wrath of the firegods" two people play against each other by throwing burning rocks from vulcanos to destroy targets on the opponents side. During gameplay, the players are able to protect themselves with walls and to modify the direction of their own rocks on their way to the enemy. Each player uses an interactive pen to take action in the game.
