Seminar in Summer Semester 2009

Mixed Reality Interaction Techniques (MRIT)

Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Raimund Dachselt, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Spindler, Dipl.-Ing. Jana Sieber

TimeTuesday, 9:00 - 11:00 (starts March, 31st)
RoomSeminar room G29-K058
Credits2 SWS, ECTS-Credits: 3/4
SpracheCommunication Language: English

Goals

Participants of the seminar will learn how to work scientifically and how to publish their own scientific paper on a recent research topic. The goal is to write an overview paper using several publications, to peer-review it using an online conference system and to finally present and discuss the work at a simulated conference. The result will be printed and online proceedings will be published similar to a real conference. Through this seminar, students shall be acquainted with and be better prepared for their own scientific working.

Research Topics

A new trend in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is the interaction with real objects and environments. Examples are Augmented Reality systems, where user interfaces (UI) are projected on real-world settings; Tangible UIs allowing interaction with graspable objects; Tabletop Interfaces converting everyday furniture to ambient computers; or even mobile applications in urban spaces such as interactive public displays. All these areas - that we subsume as Mixed Reality (MR) Interaction techniques - provide a more natural approach compared to the conventional metaphor of the desktop environment. In this seminar, we will study current research work in order to improve our understanding of cutting-edge MR interaction techniques. Among the "hot" topics are:

Prerequisites

You can attend this seminar as a diploma or master student. See the UnivIS system for further details. All students are welcome, who are enthusiastic about this topic and eager to learn how to work and publish in science. English is a must, since most of the publications are written in this language. Part of your work will be to look for scientific papers, read them and write about them. However, creativity and your own ideas are most welcome for our seminar work. Since the resulting papers are published online and printed, make sure you adhere to copyright regulations (details to follow). Expected number of participants: 20. Depending on the final number, 1-2 students are expected to work together on a topic. Depending on the participants, this seminar will be taught in English or German.

Please register for this seminar with your name, course, year and e-mail address using the institute's office (G29-R218) or via e-mail.
