Virtual Anatomy

The project “Virtual Anatomy”, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy started on October 1st 2015. During 2.5 years, innovative concepts shall be developed and tested to modernize the anatomy education. For example, the body donors that are used by medical students for preparation training are scanned in high resolution such that the preparation can also be simulated virtually. While the body donors can only be used for a limited time, the virtual models are basically always available. One of the practical research questions is how to directly integrate the viewing and analysis of 3D models into the curriculum of the anatomy education.

The project is headed by Dornheim Medical Images. The company brings their competencies in the segmentation of medical image data. Furthermore, the Institute of Anatomy (Prof. Rothkötter) is involved in the project. The developed solutions are tested and refined at the Institute of Anatomy. The Visualization Group supports the project with their experience in medical training systems and realizes innovative visualization techniques for the resulting complex data.
